Writing Workshop - Descriptive Writing
  • Create a tab in your Writer's Notebook in the Writing/Grammar tab for Descriptive Writing.
  • Sum up the following notes and add to this page in your Writer's Notebook.

Descriptive Writing

  1. Good descriptive writing includes many vivid sensory details that paint a picture and appeals to all of the reader's senses of sight, hearing, touch, smell and taste when appropriate. Descriptive writing may also paint pictures of the feelings the person, place or thing invokes in the writer.
  2. Good descriptive writing often makes use of figurative language such as analogies, similes and metaphors to help paint the picture in the reader's mind.
  3. Good descriptive writing uses precise language. General adjectives, nouns, and passive verbs do not have a place in good descriptive writing. Use specific adjectives and nouns and strong action verbs to give life to the picture you are painting in the reader's mind.
  4. Good descriptive writing is organized. Some ways to organize descriptive writing include: chronological (time), spatial (location), and order of importance. When describing a person, you might begin with a physical description, followed by how that person thinks, feels and acts. (Source)

Discuss within your group your insights of Antonia as an archetype of Mother Earth.

  • In one paragraph, describe Antonia as Mother Earth. You may use this graphic organizer to take notes on during your group's discussion or plan/draft your paragraph.
    • You also have a copy of this graphic organizer on the back of your "To-Do" List.
    • Three chunks are required!
  • **Archetype**: "the original pattern or model from which all things of the same kind are copied or on which they are based; a model or first form; prototype."
    • THE EARTH MOTHER. Symbolic of fruition, abundance, and fertility; this character offers spiritual and emotional nourishment to those with whom she comes in contact
      • For example: Antonia was motherly to all...her family, the Harlings, her own children.

  • Submit your draft via a Google Doc that you share with me.
    • In Google Docs, click on Create New...Document.
      • Then click on Share (upper right corner).
      • Type in my email where it says "Add People"... mrsg.homework@gmail.com
      • If possible, I will read and makes comments on the document you share, so please come back to this document to edit/revise before posting onto your blog.
